You are just as guilty of being involved in gossip if you are willing to listen. No gossip can be done unless there are two people involved. If what someone is “sharing” with you does not build up or encourage the person being discussed you need to excuse yourself from the conversation. Be bold and say, “I don’t want to be a part of gossip”.

The real difference is motive. When you begin to talk about a person or a situation what is the purpose, the intention you have in what you are about to say. We are encouraged in the Scriptures to build up, to encourage one another. If what you are sharing does not build up or encourage then maybe it would be best to keep your mouth shut. Is what you are sharing necessary or is your motive to show the listener how much you know about the situation?
