A recent article I just read stated that the two lowest paid professional positions where at least a bachelor’s degree is expected are teachers and pastors. The average teacher makes $42,000 a year while the average pastor makes $28,000. Both positions require continual education during their career and both positions usually work 50-60 hours per week. Many pastors don’t receive health insurance, retirement or travel expenses. The bible says that a workman is worthy of his hire and that one who ministers the word of God is worthy of double honor. It also says that a true minister of the gospel does not do what they do to make money. A church who appreciates their pastor ought to provide them with the best support they possibly can. I believe that a pastor who daily deals with the eternal souls of people should be well taken care of so that their focus can be on what they do and not struggle with weekly finances.
