In the bible times a person’s name was usually identified by the family he was from or the occupation that he had. For example, one man named Simon was the son of Jonah. A different man named Simon was known as Simon the tanner, that was his occupation. As time went by people began to take on last names so as to keep that connection. So we now have Simon Tanner for instance. It seems like the common use of last names began sometime around 1200-1400. Jesus Christ is really a shorten version of what was being used at the time, Jesus the Christ. He was called Jesus of Nazareth, where he grew up. Christ, meaning the Messiah was who he was.
